Assertive???

(The blog was written around a month back!) What is assertiveness? Usually, people associate assertiveness with the capability to say "no" to people because more often than not, people end up saying "yes" when actually they want to say "no". How many times have you yielded to a friend's request to go out for a drive when you wanted to lie down in your bed? Or, how many times have you lied to your relative about the abysmal state of your car which is in good shape and she asked for it. Assertiveness is much more than that. It is the ease with which one can state the correct irrespective of the odds without being rude or offending. It might sound easy but in practice that's one of the toughest things to do. Today I was coming in a train. I was lying on the upper berth. Suddenly I smelt a cigarette. A guy was sitting on the lower berth and was smoking happily unaware of the problems being faced by me because of his

Hot, Flat and Crowded

These summers I am staying at a place called Bharwari. It has been my native place since 1991. My father joined as Principal of a Degree College. Since then, I have been staying here. I studied till 8th in a school at Bharwari after which I left for Allahabad for remaining classes in pursuit of a better career and good academics. I did Engineering and got a job. For more than 2 years, I couldn't come to Bharwari during summers. In winters I did come for my sister's wedding. I could barely sleep the last two nights. Not because I got nightmares or I was busy thinking about someone or something, but because its Hot, Flat and Crowded. HOT: Its so hot here that you would sweat even if the fan is working. Our bunglow is a beautiful place to live in. However, since there is no construction on the roof and Bharwari being located in the plains of Ganges, the Sun rays are direct and non-relenting. Throughout the day the sun rays fall on our house and make it a boiler. So even at night,

Generally, when you spend a good amount of time at a place which isn't particularly fascinating and not even close to what you thought it would be, you gain a newer experience which quite often is cherished later on very fondly! College days are just like that. You are angry at each and everything. Faults are ever-ending and never-ending. Professors are boring and troublesome. Attendance is always short. The monetary condition identical to the attendance. You have issues everywhere yet you take time out to have some fun to get your mind off these hard times. But what if you get harsh times even when you go out for fun?!?! My friends and I decided to go for a movie, the first one at Ranchi. We had received quite a few warnings from fellow batchmates who had had experience of watching the movie there a day before. There were many a suggestions as well which we scoffed at since we found what they told to be highly exaggerated and fabricated. How illeterate we were! After leaving BIT b

Godaan

There is more than just one aspect to a human being’s personality. The K-serials showed just the opposite. The good were always good and the bad, perennially evil. Leave K-serials, they were the worst possible things that could have been created. In general, only one shade of a person’s character is shown if one reads some other novel or watches some movie. However, what is true in reality is that without fail every individual has various traits that define his/her nature. Good, bad, carefree, cautious, evil, divine….. a person has everything in him/her. What I feel is every individual is a split personality. The same person might act different in same situation. Godaan was first published in 1936 and is considered the greatest Hindi novel of modern Indian literature. What I liked about the book is portrayal of variety of shades of human personality. A man who was a baddie also had benevolence for others and it was circumstances that brought other aspects of his temperament. Same was t

This too shall pass!

There was a King in ancient times. He was ruling his kingdom sincerely and intelligently. His masses loved and respected him. He took great care of them. There was a famous saint in a nearby village. The king went to him to seek his blessings so that he would serve his kingdom better. The saint told the King that he was discharging his duties honestly and earnestly yet since the King had come, he (the saint) would give him something which would help the King handle drastic situations better. The saint gave the King a locket and asked him to open it and read the contents only under two conditions: either the King was so happy that he got overwhelmed by that or he was so doomed that he could find no way to handle the situation. If the locket be opened under any other situation, the effect of the locket would be of no use. The King thanked the saint and left. Many years passed. During all those years, the King came next to opening the locket, however every time some or the other thing mad

I had to change my blogspot account!!

I went to office and my manager (let’s call him Elisha) started asking me about the blog I had written earlier. “O God! How come he knows about it?”, I thought. I had not given him the link. I did forward the link to a few of my colleagues, but never to him. He was cracking his jokes regarding the blog and all I could thought was about, “Has he read the other blogs?”, “Meri to watt lag gayi beta…!!!”. What perplexed me the most was how the hell he could get my blog link. Probably you read my previous blog, 3 IDIOTS. I sent the link to one of my colleagues (let’s call him Dick!). He was reading it when Elisha came to him. Elisha saw 2 familiar names. This aroused his curiosity. He asked about what Dick was reading to which Dick told it was a blog which I had written. Oops! But I was on a sick leave!! Elisha then asked for the link. Dick had no choice but to give. Elisha might have read the blog. In my previous blogs I have written quite shamelessly about my future plans and how I hate m

3 Idiots

Here the 3 idiots are: Jiten (J), Kapil (K), and me. Amdocs is a nice company. Please don’t start applying for it. My praise is never related to work. Its about the added benefits provided by the company. There is something called AMDOCS CLUB POINTS given to each employee of Amdocs. These are the points which though not cashable, can be spent in taking part in various workshops and classes being conducted within Amdocs. For instance, if a dance class is being organized for the employees by the Amdocs Club and the cost is say Rs. 1400/-, 1400 points from the Amdocs Club points will be deducted and the employee can join those classes without spending his pennies. If the employee is unable to spend the points, at the end of the financial year, some goodies are available which can be bought using the same points. This is to encourage the employees to take part in various other-than-work activities. However, the HR has failed pathetically in its endeavor to push the guys towards extra-c

Dreams Shattered... Temporarily!!

" We are sorry to inform you that, after careful consideration, we are unable to offer you a position in this year’s Fellowship class. " This is the part of the message that I received from TFI. Right since the day I had filled the form of TFI, I was dreaming of the first day I would attend the Training, then after a month-and-half, I would start the Teaching process, of which I have no clue. I was excited for the newest experiences that I would get after reaching there. All my life, I have done things, which are to be done; Schooling for 12 years because it was to be done, Engineering for 4 years because it was to be done, also because Engineering was the safest and the most secure wrt securing of job, of all the Graduation degrees. Then there was job, again, because it was to be done. I started preparing for MBA :), sorry but here too it was to be done. A silk route... from Engineering to IT to MBA to a well paid job which is also known in social terms as A GOOD JOB. I had

Horn...!!

I was going from ground floor to the fourth floor using the elevator when an advertisement caught my attention. On OOH TV, a quote came which said, "When did you last listen birds chirp?". It forced me to think, more than think, to ACT. I could not understand what exactly to do, so I followed what was told in the ad. I decided I would not blow horn while commuting. From the next day I started acting on it. FIRST DAY: It was very tough for me not to blow horn. After all it IS diffcult to control your instincts. 6 months of regular blowing of horn and screaming on people while driving can not be controlled so easily, that too in a day!! But I was determined. For the first kilometer, it wasnt difficult controlling the urge, and I thought people are just unnecessarily polluting the nature by honking all the time. I was such a naive. As soon as the main road came, I was shown the reality. I could not even gather where the noise was coming from, the simple reason being it was comin

May you live in INTERESTING TIMES....

May you live in INTERESTING TIMES....This is a Chinese proverb. Initially it was supposed to be a curse like we now use "Go to Hell!". But one can look at it from a different perspective. Usually its bad times that brings the best out of people. Change is the name of the game. So, this proverb may be assumed as a High Profit High Loss prospect where if one fights and survives, one gains, otherwise its The End! I feel the year 2009 is going to be Interesting and Exciting, for the previous mentioned reasons. Recession is here. Employees are being laid off. Companies are falling apart. Stocks are nose-diving. Unemployed are sky-rocketing. Profits are abysmal and hence, the future seems to be gloomy like never before... correct? WRONG! This is the time of introspection, a time when instead of finding short cuts, one needs to know the basics of things and implement with caution. A time to remove the glitches which should have been nipped in the bud. A time for new opportunities, i
